What the public (apparently) accepts as legitimate forecasting

Wild Weather Dan, fellow AGU member, and meteorologist extraordinaire, rightly scoffs at a CBS News piece about the Old Farmers Almanac. Being in the middle of reading a biography of Benjamin Franklin, originator of said Old Farmers Almanac, I am entirely sure Dr Franklin would be thoroughly embarrassed at the opinions and pronouncements of said Almanac in this regard. Being a major scientist of his day, he would be right there with the meteorologists and climate scientists. Remember, in his day, preachers railed against installation of his lightning rods, because presuming to model how the realm of the Divine worked was just blasphemy.
